 Gazing in wonderment

Amelia and her Aunt Elisa were shopping for fabric for upcoming balls. Aunt Elisa had stopped in the street to talk to an acquaintance, so Amelia had taken the chance to duck into the Sweet Shoppe. She adored sweets, but hadn't had any in forever. Aunt Elisa didn't believe in fattening foods such as those.

Amelia gazed longingly at the different sweetmeats, imagining how each would taste in her mouth, without the affects to her figure.

Lionel had taken today for granted, or so his mother had said. Instead of helping his mother prepare for the ball they were planning (which I am going to do one, just so you know.) he had taken Anne, his elegent roan mare, out for a ride. He had no true interest in the complicated preparations for such an event.

Anne halted before one of the stores in town, chomping down on a piece of clover growing ambitiously out of a large crack in the sidewalk. Perhaps he had left her without sustanence for too long. Lionel pushed himself out of the saddle and brought Anne over to a large patch of green under a hitching post. "Okay girl, I'm going to leave you here for awhile. Is that alright with you?" Anne looked up from her meal just long enough to let out a soft nicker. Lionel smiled, sometimes it seemed like Anne could really understand him.

Lionel turned to the nearest shop, it would be easier to go inside rather than wait for his horse to finish eating. Entering the shop, Lionel took a glance around. Candy lined the walls. Tall glass bottles held assortments of peppermints, licorice, large suckers, soft candy, and many kinds which weren't familiar to him. There was one other person in the store, she was staring intently at a glass case filled with iced cookies.

Amelia smiled at the man that had entered the shop. It seemed as though she wasn't the only one who had been taken in by these beautiful candies. Although, it was rather odd for a young woman of her age to long after them so much.

"How are you today, sir?" she asked, recognizing the young man she had seen in the park the other day.

Lionel bowed, common curdisy to a woman of her stature. He remembered her from their brief meeting in the park. "In good health, my lady. And what of you? What brings you to this establishment?" A grin appeared on his visage, revealing bright white teeth.

Amelia smiled and gestured to the surrounding sweetmeats. "The beauty drew me in...I'm afraid I was tempted to try some, without regarding the affects on my person." She liked this man. He was very gentlemanly and charming.

"I do not think that one piece of candy would matter, my lady. Would you like one?" Lionel took a few coins from his pocket. This lady, she cared too much about her appearance. She was beautiful.

Amelia smiled. "No, thank you, sir. My aunt would positively murder me. I am supposed to meet the Queen soon." Amelia blushed and changed the subject. "So, what drew you into this shop?"

Amelia knew that she shouldn't be concerned about her figure, but in today's society so much was placed on how tight your corset was. Girls were endlessly comparing the size of their waists. And to Amelia's constant dismay, she was one of the smallest without having any curves.

Squelching his immense interest in her affiliation with Queen Victoria, Lionel returned. "Curiousity. My education as the heir to the Barony of Donzy did not cover the making of candy. And this candy was not the same as those in France."

Lionel fingered a peppermint cane, its multicolored surface becoming slightly slick under his gloved fingers. Still holding the candy cane, Lionel walked over to the counter and purchased it. Turning, he walked back over to the lady, her features were a mixture of annoyance and concentration. A thought occured to Lionel. "Would you like to meet my horse? She is right outside."

Amelia laughed softly. She felt more comfortable around him, knowing that he also had a title. Perhaps then he wouldn't be intimidated by hers. In reality, her title was excessive for a young woman, and didn't describe her at all.

"I would love to meet your horse," said Amelia, who had been brought up with a deep love and admiration for the animal who did so much labor for humans. Her own horse, Lady, had been left in Northumberland when she was taken in by her aunt and uncle.

Lionel grinned. He thought well of this lady, hopefully she would know something of horse breeds. Most ladies that tried for his attention, although having a large fund of knowledge in fashion and gossip, had no information on the subject of horses.

Lionel glanced at the beautiful lady, motioning towards the door. "Are you finished here my lady?" Lionel wished he knew her name, calling her a lady was to protocal, yet, it seemed so impersonal.

"Yes, I am done," said Amelia, "And please, call me Amelia." She smiled at the young man and exited the shoppe, stopping on the sidewalk when she saw his horse. "Oh, she's beautiful! From her size, I'm assuming it's a mare."

Amelia hoped that she wasn't be presumptious, but this man's horse really was beautiful.
