Penelope smiled and kicked Jack gently in the sides. He took off in a gallop, his black mane whipping behind him. Penelope's hat nearly flew off so she brabbed it and stuck it in her parasol.

Lionel glanced back, she was gaining on him! Of course she had the better horse but still, he did not want to lose a race he had started! He slapped Anne's rump, hoping to get more speed. Ever so slightly he pulled even more ahead of Jack and Penelope.

Lady Penelope struggled a bit to get comfortable. I mean, seriously, try galloping at sidesaddle! She leaned forward as Jack picked up. His head was coming up alongside the mare's flank. Lady Penelope laughed and hit Jack's flank. The stallion pulled up ahead in speed, but was still behind the other pair.

Lionel grinned and looked back at the stallion and his rider, they were gaining! "You can't do better than that Penelope?" Although he sounded condemning he respected her ability to maintain a full gallop on a sidesattle.

Penelope laughed and swatted Jack's flank yet again. He picked up speed but remained behind the other two.
Come on Jack ol' buddy! You can do this! she said swatting the stallion again.

Sweat began to dampen Anne's coat, her mouth was foaming. "Come on Anne! Just a little further! You can beat them!" Kicking Anne's sides Lionel tried to gain more speed but Anne began to slow, lessening the distance between the two horses.

Jack sped up as Penelope swatted his flank.
Come on Jack! You can do this! Penelope said, smiling and patting the horse's shoulder.
What? Are you guys tired or something? Penelope asked jokingly as she looked back at Lionel and his mare. She laughed and paid attention to what was ahead of her.
